Sunday Morning Sermon Summary

Pastor Paul Lundberg

Series: Plea Bargains (Studies in Jeremiah)

September 28, 2008

THE MORE THINGS CHANGE THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME

Nothing will change until we change what we care about

Me:      Frustrated by crutches, go back and not do it

We:     Frustrated by consequences (blame, expect leniency, rationalize r/w, plead, plea bargain)

VIDEO

Jeremiah 7:30-32 "'The people of Judah have done evil in my eyes, declares the Lord. They have set up their detestable idols in the house that bears my Name and have defiled it. They have built the high places of Topheth in the Valley of Ben Hinnom to burn their sons and daughters in the fire — something I did not command, nor did it enter my mind. So beware, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when people will no longer call it Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room.’”

GOD:  Abortion (93% to avoid consequences; 37% Protestants, majority evangelical)

            NOW SLOGAN

            Homosexuality – “born this way”

CONCEIVED in sin (Psalms 51:5 Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother

                        conceived me. )

CONTROLLED by consequences of sin (Ezekiel 16:49  Look, this was the iniquity of your

sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of

idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy.

You:    Matthew 5:3 Blessed (grounded, secure, confident, bold) are the poor in spirit (dependent) FOR THEIRS IS THE KINGDOM (power and authority to make changes)

We:     Nothing will change until we change what we care about

Matthew 22:37-40 "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment. 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

      1) CHANGE MY SELF Psalm 51:6-12 Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place. Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

            “Come, follow me”

      2) CHANGE MY CULTURE Psalm 51:13 THEN I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you.

            “Go, make disciples”

John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 20:21 As the Father has sent me, so send I you!
