Morning Sermon Summary
Pastor Paul Lundberg
Series: “Taking Care of Business”
Part 6: “Pressed Down, Shaken Together, Running Over”
(Luke 6:38)
Sunday, August 24, 2008
ME:
Reality. Once I give IT (time, talent, treasure) away,
it’s gone. Will God really give me what I need if I give
Him what I have? If God’s character is revealed …what
about the Beatitudes?The
truth is camping is a lot more comfortable and sometimes
staying in a nice hotel or just staying home is pretty
attractive.
I CAN FIND A LOT OF GOOD REASONS FOR DOING WHAT I REALLY
WANT TO DO?
IT’S NOT CALLED “THE EASY WAY OUT” FOR NOTHING!
WE:
The day is only so long and the week still has only 7
days.
There’s only so much money and this energy thing is
killing me.
I’m not young anymore.
I can’t do everything I used to be able to (and I didn’t
do it when I could anyway!).
Jesus lived 2000 years ago. It just isn’t the same
today! GET REAL!
GOD:
It’s more blessed to
give AND to
receive!
Luke 6:38 -
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure,
pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be
poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it
will be measured to you."
REALITY
#1. JESUS SHOWED THE WAY
Hebrews 12:2
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter
of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the
cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right
hand of the throne of God.
To mow a straight row I had to set my eyes on a fix
point straight ahead
REALITY
#2. INVESTMENT BEFORE RETURN – DEPOSIT BEFORE WITHDRAWAL
Galatians 6:6, 7 “Whatever
a man sows that will he also reap.”
Genesis 1:11 –
seed after it’s own kind
“The fruit of the Spirit contains the seeds of the
gospel”
Matthew 6:19, 20
Store up…for
yourself…treasures in heaven
1 Timothy 6:18
Storing up …for
themselves…a good foundation for the time to come
Get to give//give and get
REALITY
#3. STEWARDS HERE AND NOW – OWNERS THERE AND THEN
Romans 11:35, 36(We don’t own it to begin with) “From
Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to Him be
the glory both now and to the day of eternity.”
Luke 16:11-12
If you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly
wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you
have not been trustworthy with someone else's property,
who will give you property of your own?
ULTIMATE
REALITY WE
CAN’T OUT-GIVE GOD!
2 Corinthians. 9:8 “God
is able to make all grace abound to you so that having
all things,
at
all times,
you will have all that you
need so you can abound in
every good work.”
Hebrews 11:6 …without
faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who
comes to him must believe that he exists and that
he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Luke 6:38 -
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure,
pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be
poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it
will be measured to you."
Hudson Taylor (Missionary to China): “When God’s work is
done in God’s way for God’s glory, it will never lack
God’s supply.”
YOU:
God will give me what I need when I give Him what I have
(The most dangerous time in life is that time when you
don’t have needs)
(America’s downfall)
…give and receive (pressed down, shaken together,
running over)
God’s character is displayed in the gifts He provides …
the measure you use
To get where you’re going you have to follow directions
(keeping
our eyes on Jesus)
It’s more blessed to give AND to receive
WE:
Malachi 3:10
Test me in this," says the Lord Almighty, "and see if I
will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour
out so much blessing that you will not have room enough
for it.
If you give what you do not need, it isn’t giving.
(Mother Theresa)
The goal of a backpacking trip is NOT to finish with a
full pack of food and fuel!
Acts 2:44-47 (GIVE)
All the believers were together and had everything in
common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave
to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to
meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in
their homes and ate together with glad and sincere
hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the
people. (RECEIVE)
And the Lord added to their number daily those who were
being saved.
