POP QUIZ!
ME Backpacking: Difficulty picking a time and place
to go (so many choices); Frustration with not going; Blaney Meadows
WE (Christian) life is a journey
►1. If you have no destination any
path, or no path at all, will do
►2. Having a map and a guide (GPS!) is only useful
if you follow
them
►3.Nothing is worse than a heavy pack loaded with unnecessary stuff
GOD ►Proverbs
3:1-4 My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in
your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you
prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them
around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you
will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
►To
get where you’re going, you need to follow directions!
YOU:
►1. We’re on a journey toward Heaven;we’re not
“camping” on earth. (elaborate, comfortable)
The destination AND the journey are rewarding
(Favor and a good name in the sight
of God AND man)
“Lay up treasures in heaven” “Seek first…all will be added”
►What God does for His glory always
works for our good! only thing about heaven: it’s better
than here!
►2. “The law of God” (WRITTEN WORD)
is our map;
►Jesus (LIVING WORD) is our guide
(“Follow me!”)
►a. Teaching and commands
(principles vs. cultural instructions: “pluck out your eye”, etc.)
►b. Love and faithfulness: CARE-FULL (love) and RESPONSIBLE
(faithfulness)
►3. Carry only those things that you need for the journey to heaven
Hebrews 12:1, 2 Therefore…let us throw off everything that hinders
and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with
perseverance the race
marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author
and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured
the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the
throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful
men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
►a.
Lay aside EVERY weight
(use up – pack gets lighter – goal is not to come home with food and
fuel)
►b. “Run the race marked
out for us” (follow directions)
Camping is for relaxation, back packing is for exercise (and the
scenery is great)
(look behind you; mile markers, “you will find rest for your soul”)
WE
What if? We considered ourselves to be ON A TRIP together instead of
JUST CAMPING (to win favor and a good name with God and man)? What
if we agreed to have FAITH in the map and compass (keeping our eyes
on Jesus), What if we agreed to provide ENCOURAGEMENT for each other
to keep going (CARE-FULL and RESPONSIBLE)?
What now? Small group, spiritual “buddy”
►Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust GOD from
the bottom of your heart; don't try to figure out everything on your
own. Listen for GOD's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he's the one who will keep you on track.
