Sunday Morning Sermon Summary
“Before You Head Out” (1 John 2:24-25)
Sunday, June 7, 2009
Two kinds of faith (belief):
Faith that saves
Faith that doesn’t (James 2:19:
“The devils believe and tremble”)
TEST YOURSELF
2
Corinthians 13:5
“Examine
yourselves to see whether you are in the faith;
test yourselves.
HANG ON
1 John
2:24-25
See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If
it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us — even eternal life.
HOW
DO I KNOW I’M “SAVED” AND GOING TO HEAVEN?
THREE TESTS OF FAITH:
Test of BELIEF
Test of BEHAVIOR
Test of BROTHERHOOD
Test of BELIEF
ASK THREE QUESTIONS:
What’s my SITUATION?
►(What was I saved FROM?)
1)OMISSION (James 4:17)
Things I didn’t do that I should have
Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn't do
it, sins.
2)COMMISSION (Romans 3:23)
Things I did that I shouldn’t have
ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God
3)CONDITION (Romans
5:12) What I am
Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and
death through sin, and in this way death came to all men … even over
those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam
(Acknowledge it)
What’s the SOLUTION? (What was I saved BY?)
Ephesians 2:8
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not
from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one
can boast.
“Salvation
by GRACE alone, thru FAITH alone in CHRIST alone.”
Intimacy (Come, follow me”) Body of Christ; Army of God;
Bride of Christ
(Accept it)
What’s the OUTCOME (What was I saved FOR?)
Good works
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God's workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us
to do.
Love
1 Peter 4:7-11
The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and
self-controlled so that you can pray. Above all, love each other
deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer
hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each one should use
whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God's grace in its various forms.
If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words
of God. If anyone serves,
he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all
things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory
and the power forever and ever. Amen.
Make Disciples
Matthew
28:19
"All authority in heaven and
on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples
of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the
Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I
have commanded you.
(Do it!)
John 6:28 "What must we DO to do
the works God requires?" Jesus answered, "The work of God is this:
to believe in the one he
has sent."(John 3:16)
Three tests: 1) TEST OF BELIEF:
“Believing” includes acknowledging my sin (what I was saved
FROM), accepting God’s grace (what I was saved BY), and doing God’s
will (what I was saved FOR)
2) TEST OF BEHAVIOR:
Can I say I
believe something
that hasn’t changed me?
3) TEST OF BROTHERHOOD:
Can I say I
believe something
I’m not intimately connected to?
